Musical friendships at the Academy: Liszt and Paganini
Ingres gave music much attention: he welcomed Franz Liszt and Fanny Mendelssohn, formed a long friendship with Liszt, and played Beethoven's violin works with the music students and his friend Niccolò Paganini. When Stendhal, visiting the Academy, disparaged Beethoven, Ingres told the doorman to say he was not in if that gentleman ever called again.

Death of his wife Madeleine
Ingres was devastated by the loss of his wife, who died on 27 July 1849, and he was never able to finish the Dampierre murals.

Second marriage: Delphine Ramel
In 1852 the 71-year-old Ingres married the 43-year-old Delphine Ramel, a relative of his friend Marcotte d'Argenteuil. He was rejuvenated and in the following decade completed several significant works.
