조각 소개

Joined, swollen spheres form Martin Puryear's Alien Huddle, a pine-and-cedar sculpture of 1993–95 at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland. The timber and rounded organic shapes establish the close relationship between material and form found in his sculpture. Puryear draws on traditions extending from modernist abstraction to Indigenous African crafts. Boatbuilding and contemporary technology also inform his methods. He combines these sources in abstract objects that carry cultural and historical associations, bringing different kinds of making into the same body of work.
