作品について

Between 1885 and 1887 Muybridge took thousands of photographs of animals moving, which he assembled in series in such a way that the motion was clear to see. He published 781 of these plates in the book Animal Locomotion in 1887. A complete series cost a whopping 600 dollars. Muybridge’s work nevertheless exerted great influence: chiefly anatomists and other scientists were keen to use it.

  1. 1883

A lecture arranged by Eakins and an invitation to Penn

In 1883 Muybridge gave a lecture at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, arranged by the artist Thomas Eakins and University of Pennsylvania trustee Fairman Rogers; a group of Philadelphians, including Penn Provost William Pepper and the publisher J. B. Lippincott, recruited him to work at Penn under their sponsorship.

  2. 1884

Thomas Eakins studies Muybridge’s method at his side

In 1884 Eakins briefly worked alongside Muybridge to learn more about applying photography to the study of human and animal motion; he later favoured multiple exposures superimposed on a single negative, while Muybridge continued to use multiple cameras.

  3. 1887

“Animal Locomotion” appears: 11 volumes, 781 plates

In 1887 the photographs were published as a massive collotype portfolio of 11 volumes with 781 plates comprising 20,000 of the photographs, titled “Animal Locomotion: An Electro-photographic Investigation of Consecutive Phases of Animal Movements”; the work contributed substantially to biomechanics and the mechanics of athletics.
