This carved ivory panel depicting the Crucifixion shares a distinctive patterned border and the use of inlay with other examples made for Emperor Charles the Bald (823-77). It was probably part of the decoration of a book cover and is likely to have been made at Reims, one of the main centres of manuscript illumination in the Carolingian period.
