Sentenced for an affair with a married woman

Already the master of his own workshop, he was sentenced to six months in prison and a fine for an affair with a married woman, the wife of the sailor Francesco Cortese. Before that he had studied with the Vivarini in Venice and is believed to have worked in Francesco Squarcione’s workshop in Padua.

  3. 1459

    Leaves for Zadar

After the sentence he leaves for Zadar in Dalmatia, then a territory of the Venetian Republic and now part of Croatia.

  4. 1468

    Moves to the Marche

He moves to the Marche and works there for the rest of his life. There his pupil and collaborator was Pietro Alemanno, a painter who had come from Germany or Austria.

A permanent home in Ascoli Piceno

From 1473 the documents give Ascoli Piceno as Crivelli’s permanent residence; they also point to Camerino and Fabriano. He worked on commissions from the Franciscans and Dominicans of Ascoli.
