Huile sur papier marouflé sur carton ; Plage animée et grand ciel sur les 2/3 de la peinture. A gauche, on aperçoit la mer, deux barques et 3 silhouettes. En arrière-plan, les dunes de sable, des silhouettes, une construction et un clocher. Au centre, la scène principale se compose d'un attelage de 4 chevaux dont un monté par un cavalier et d'une voiture avec un cocher. Autour de la voiture, différents personnages debout ou marchant sur le sable. A droite, une barque échouée.

In 1850 Boudin won a scholarship that allowed him to settle in Paris and enrol as a student in Eugène Isabey's studio; to supplement his income he often went back to Normandy to paint.

From 1855 Boudin made regular trips to Brittany, the region his future wife came from.

Friendship with the young Claude Monet
Boudin befriended the 17-year-old Claude Monet and persuaded him to give up his teenage caricatures and become a landscape painter, instilling in him a love of bright colour and of light playing on water. They remained lifelong friends, and Monet later paid tribute to his early influence.
