Paintings on mica (a naturally occurring mineral) were made in southern and eastern India and were popular with the British. The unusual medium made them desirable and they were brought back to England in large numbers. Paintings were produced in sets with themes such as deities, wildlife, occupations, architecture and the festivals of the region.
