This painting was produced in the Punjab plains in about 1835. The opulent Kashmir shawls and jewellery worn by the two unidentified figures suggests they are princes. Turban jewels and feather plumes are emblems of royalty throughout South Asia. They are identifiable as Sikhs by their uncut hair (kesh), one of the articles of faith in Sikhism, adopted in 1699 by followers of Guru Gobind Singh.
