Het onthoofde lichaam van de apostel Paulus ligt op de grond, op de plaats waar zijn hoofd valt ontstaan twee fonteinen. Een Romeinse bevelhebber en zijn gevolg van onder andere soldaten kijkt toe. De soldaat die de heilige onthoofde rechts, stopt zijn zwaard weer in de schede. Linksboven twee schilden met het keurvorstelijk en hertogelijk wapen van Saksen.

Cranach was granted nobility and a personal coat of arms — a winged serpent with a ruby ring in its mouth, which became the signature of his works and workshop.

Marriage to Barbara Brengbier
Around 1512 Cranach married Barbara Brengbier, daughter of the burgomaster of Gotha; the couple had six children in all.
