Move to Rome
In 1629 Swanevelt moved to Rome, where he painted numerous landscapes and became a pupil and follower of Claude Lorrain. For his depictions of ancient ruins he earned the nickname "Herman of Italy."
1630s
Commissions from the Barberini and the Vatican
During his Roman period Swanevelt's works became highly popular: he received commissions from the Barberini family, Pope Urban VIII and the Vatican, including for the monastery of Monte Cassino; at the Palazzo Pamphilj he painted frescoes.

Return to Paris
In 1641 Swanevelt returned to Paris, where he remained for the rest of his life, only occasionally visiting his native Woerden. He took part in the decoration of the Hôtel Lambert together with Jan Asselijn.

Admission to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture
In 1651 Swanevelt was admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. In France he enjoyed the patronage of Cardinal Richelieu and King Louis XIV.
