In 1638 the King in Council, by letters patent, granted Van Dyck the rights of denizenship in England.

On 27 February 1640 Van Dyck married Mary Ruthven, daughter of Patrick Ruthven and a lady-in-waiting to the queen; the marriage produced a daughter.

When Rubens died in May 1640, Van Dyck was invited to go to Antwerp to take charge of their former workshop.
