In Fort Gotham 646, Brad Kahlhamer incorporates a variety of faces, shapes, and texts to create a haunting painting that references many important influences in his life, including the New York City music scene, Native American iconography, art historical references, characters in his life, and his own personal odyssey. Kahlhamer’s use of distortion, dripping paint, and multiple subjects creates a sense of disruption, distortion, immediacy, and complexity. Within his work, a sense of spontaneity and control appear simultaneously.
