School and a Sunday drawing school
From 1863 to 1867 he attends a state school in Leipzig and, on Sundays, Brauer’s drawing school; until 1873 he then studies at the Realschule (later the Petrischule).

Rejected by Anton von Werner
The Dresden architect and art historian Franz Richard Steche recommends Klinger to the Berlin painter Anton von Werner, who rejects the young man but refers him to Karl Gussow in Karlsruhe.

Studies in Karlsruhe under Gussow
In April he enrols at the Grand Ducal Baden Art School in Karlsruhe under Karl Gussow and Ludwig des Coudres, and during these years becomes a well-known pianist in the city.

Berlin: sharing a studio with Christian Krohg
He follows Gussow, who has become director of the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin, to finish his studies there; he shares a studio with Christian Krohg, the two admire Émile Zola and Gustave Flaubert, and Adolph von Menzel serves as his model.
