Anverso: Composición con tres figuras. Composición con tres figuras, la de primer término sentada, con los brazos apoyados a ambos lados del cuerpo; detrás de ella otra figura parece estar trepando hacia la derecha sobre una superficie inclinada; al fondo figura de pie, con su brazo derecho sobre el pecho. Reverso: Sombrero y rasguños de mobiliario. En la parte superior, sombrero de copa semiesférica con ala estrecha vuelta. En la parte inferior, girando el papel 90º, borde de una mesa de perfil mixtilíneo, sobre la que apoya un elemento decorativo o quizás una lámpara o quinqué, de base plana cuadrada apoyada en una bola y cuerpo cilíndrico. Sobre el dibujo se ha copiado por contacto el nº Inv. 14167.

    Madrid: studying the old masters in the Prado

    At eighteen Sorolla travelled to Madrid and studied the master paintings in the Museo del Prado with great energy.

  2. 1885

    A four-year grant to study in Rome

    Having completed his military service, the twenty-two-year-old Sorolla received a grant from the Spanish Academy in Rome for four years of study in Italy. In Rome he was welcomed by the academy’s director, Francisco Pradilla, in whose example the young painter found stability.

  3. 1885

    Paris: his first encounter with modern painting

    A long stay in Paris gave him his first exposure to modern painting; he was especially struck by exhibitions of Jules Bastien-Lepage and Adolph von Menzel. Back in Rome he studied with José Benlliure, Emilio Sala and José Villegas Cordero.
