This is one of a sequence of paintings which depicts the journey by boat across the Mumbai harbour to the Panvel jetty, then to Kapoli, up the Bhor Ghat to Lonavla and onwards to Pune.
As the traveller went towards the 'Duke's nose', a landmark within the mountain range, named after the Duke of Wellington (1769-1852), whose distinctive nose it resembles, they followed the road up the Bhor Ghat, which became gradually steeper. Here, Chambers depicts the dramatic view of the rocky cliffs rising on either side of the road.
