Much of Paul Thomas's work is concerned with subjects from mythology. This example comes from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The god Apollo was struck by one of Cupid's golden arrows and fell in love with the nymph Daphne. Pursued by the amorous Apollo, Daphne found she could run no further. She prayed for release and was transformed into a laurel tree.
