For this finished drawing, Nakahashi employed a visual tech-nique known as trompe l’oeil (“fool the eye”), whereby the two main elements—oval and grid—appear to spatially intersect. The oval, mostly suggested, seems to exist both behind and on the surface of the grid pattern. Shadowing along the right and bottom sides of the grid adds to the sense that the drawing exists as a three-dimensional object within the composition.
