Иллюстрации к „Сказке о царе Салтане“ И. Я. Билибин исполнил в 1904–1905 годах, это было первым обращением художника к сказочному тексту поэта. Художник смог соединить в своем творчестве традиции народного искусства, идущие от лубка, с принципами профессионального искусства и использовал знание бытовых реалий прошлых эпох, подчерпнутые из путешествий по северу России. Ему не удалось еще достичь здесь полного стилевого единства иллюстраций всей книги, как в „Сказке о золотом петушке“, но читатель и здесь в полной мере мог почувствовать таинственность и красочность волшебного мира сказки. Expeditions to the Russian North: wooden architecture
In 1902, 1903 and 1904 the ethnographic department of the Museum of Alexander III sent Bilibin to the Vologda, Olonets and Arkhangelsk Governorates to study wooden architecture. Old Russian art had a great influence on his work.

A founding member of the Union of Russian Artists
Bilibin became one of the founding members of the Union of Russian Artists and remained in it until 1910.
1904
Publishes a study of the folk art of the Russian North
Bilibin published the findings of his northern expeditions in the monograph Folk Arts of the Russian North.
1906
A cartoon of the Tsar gets Zhupel banned
During the Revolution of 1905–1907 Bilibin drew revolutionary cartoons, especially for the magazine Zhupel. In 1906 the magazine was banned because of his drawing depicting the Emperor as a donkey.
1907
A plot by the sea at Batiliman, with Kuprin and Korolenko
Bilibin became one of the shareholders of a plot at Batiliman on the southern coast of Crimea, bought for summer houses by a group of intellectuals including Korolenko, Kuprin, Vernadsky and Ioffe. By lot he received land right by the sea with a fisherman's hut, to which he added a studio, and from then on he went there every year after classes, returning in the autumn.
1907
Teaches graphic art at the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts
From 1907 to 1917 Bilibin taught the graphic art class at the school of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts; his pupils included Georgy Narbut, Konstantin Eliseev, Nikolai Kuzmin, Kira Voronets-Popova and Renée O'Connell.
