Many British artists painted the wonderful views in and around Rome. They often sold them as souvenirs. Jonathan Skelton (active 1735-1759) was one of the first artists to depict sites of the Grand Tour. In the 18th century many noblemen and gentlemen went on the Grand Tour to complete their education. The aim was to see the great sights of Europe, especially those in Italy. This watercolour was probably a study for an oil painting.
