    A collector's agent: Canal's views have “the sun shining”

    In 1725 Alessandro Marchesini, buyer for the Lucchese collector Stefano Conti, asks about two more “views of Venice” and is urged instead to consider the work of Antonio Canal: it is like Carlevaris, but you can see the sun shining in it.

    Owen Swiny urges him to paint views for tourists

    Many of Canaletto's pictures are sold to Englishmen on their Grand Tour, first through the agency of Owen Swiny, who in the late 1720s encourages him to paint small topographical views of Venice with a commercial appeal for tourists and foreign visitors to the city.
