Sull’opera
This limited-edition set of postcards features reproductions of works by Surrealist artists, including Dora Maar, Max Ernst, and Hans Bellmer. The postcards contain playful, unsettling, and at times overtly sexual imagery. Intended for circulation via mail, they challenged the exclusivity and institutional structures of the art market while extending the Surrealists’ commitment to staging unexpected encounters. For the postcard depicting a body with two sets of legs but no head (in the case) and the photograph in the drawer below, Bellmer fabricated mannequins from papier-mâché and disarticulated doll parts then photographed them in provocative poses and states of deconstruction. The images responded to the heightened visibility of bodily dismemberment in the aftermath of World War I, while engaging Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theories of fetishism and castration anxiety.
