About the sculpture
The anatomical distortions seen on this piece imply that it was intended to be viewed from below. Almost all the original painted colours and gilding has been lost. The integral frame and the relief's small scale suggest it was a devotional item for a domestic context, rather than having formed part of an altarpiece.
