Turns from Surrealism to a manner of his own
By the early 1940s Balthus has finally left the principles of Surrealism behind; his attention is drawn to the theme of awakening femininity, and symbolic motifs — a mirror, a butterfly, a cat — and adolescent girls in domestic settings begin to appear in his canvases.
1947
Travels to the south of France with André Masson
Travelling with André Masson, Balthus meets figures such as Picasso and Jacques Lacan, who will eventually become a collector of his work.
1948
Designs “The State of Siege” at Camus’s request
His friend Albert Camus asks him to design the sets and costumes for his play L’État de siège (The State of Siege), directed by Jean-Louis Barrault.
1950
Designs Mozart’s “Così fan tutte”
With Adolphe Mouron Cassandre, Balthus designs the stage decor for a production of Mozart’s opera Così fan tutte in Aix-en-Provence.
