Bartholomew cured the possessed daughter of King Polemius. When the king converted to Christianity and arranged for the destruction of all idols, his brother gave orders to have the apostle flayed alive. Blood spurts from the martyr’s flayed arm as Ribera depicts real violence. The realistically rendered executioner, with a knife between his teeth, methodically carries out his duty. Blessed with a vision of God, the apostle spreads his arms in a gesture signalling identification with Christ.
