Albers trained as an art teacher at the Königliche Kunstschule in Berlin; other accounts give 1913–1916.

Stained glass with Johan Thorn Prikker in Essen
At the Kunstgewerbeschule in Essen Albers began working as a printmaker and learned stained-glass making from the Dutch artist Johan Thorn Prikker. His early woodcuts and lithographs have been judged no better than average Expressionism.

Moves to Munich to study with Doerner and Stuck
Albers moved to Munich to study at the Royal Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts under Max Doerner and Franz Stuck; his studies there lasted from 1919 to 1920.
