While it might seem odd that Rembrandt is wearing a hat inside the house, it was actually part of his studio work clothes. This unadorned

portrayal makes one almost forget the unparalleled technique he uses to create this effect. With a combination of etching and drypoint, he achieves an unprecedented painterly tonality.
