Settles in San Remo at the Villa Tennyson
In the 1870s Lear settled in San Remo, on his beloved Mediterranean coast, in a villa he named Villa Tennyson.

A collection of nonsense songs, stories and alphabets appears
In 1871 Lear published Nonsense Songs, Stories, Botany and Alphabets, which included the nonsense song “The Owl and the Pussy-Cat”, written for the children of his patron Edward Stanley, 13th Earl of Derby.
1873–1875
A tour of India with a detour to Ceylon
In 1873–75 Lear toured India, with a brief detour to Ceylon.
1877
“Laughable Lyrics” is published
In 1877 Laughable Lyrics: A Fresh Book of Nonsense Poems, Songs, Botany, etc. was published, containing “The Dong with a Luminous Nose”.
