Leggi

Nella vita di Vasily Andreevich Tropinin

Tutta la vita
  1. 1804

First work shown at the Academy exhibition

At the Academy’s exhibition Tropinin shows his work for the first time; the picture is praised by the Academy’s adjunct rector Ivan Akimov and by Empress Maria Feodorovna, who visits the show.

  2. 1804

Morkov recalls him to Kukavka in Podolia

On learning of the interest that high-ranking people take in his serf, Count Morkov recalls Tropinin from Petersburg to his new estate, the Podolian village of Kukavka in Ukraine, where Tropinin serves at once as servant, shepherd, architect and artist. Later, in his memoirs, Tropinin will write of his gratitude to the count, who, he says, made him a great artist.

  3. until 1804

A serf as a listener at the Academy of Arts

Living in the capital under the supervision of the count’s cousin Alexei Ivanovich, he secretly attends lectures at the Academy; on seeing his drawings, Alexei Ivanovich persuades his cousin to send the young man to study and promises to cover all the costs. Under the Academy’s statute serfs could attend only as fee-paying free listeners: for six years Tropinin works in the plaster and painting classes, learns the basics of the craft in the studio of Professor Stepan Shchukin, and twice takes first place in Academy competitions.

  4. 1804

Stroganov promises to obtain his freedom

Count Alexander Stroganov, the Academy’s president, learns from Orest Kiprensky that one of the best students is a serf and promises to obtain his freedom for Tropinin.

  5. after 1804

    Marries Anna Katina

In Kukavka Tropinin marries Anna Ivanovna Katina, a free settler; under the laws of the time husband and wife were to have equal status, but instead of freeing Tropinin the count registers his wife as a serf as well.

  6. 1812

War of 1812: summoned to Moscow

The Patriotic War finds Tropinin in Little Russia; when Morkov is elected to the leadership of the Moscow militia, the artist is summoned to Moscow and arrives in the ancient capital with a convoy of his master’s property.
