Journey to Rome and Venice with his brother
With his brother Johann Zacharias, an ornamental painter, he travels to Rome and Venice, studying the works of Titian and Tintoretto and painting historical subjects and portraits in the studio of Carlo Maratti. He then moves to Hamburg.

Move to England
With his brother he comes to England and wins the patronage of the Duke of Monmouth; he is introduced to Charles II and paints the king's portrait. In England he devotes himself almost entirely to portraiture.

Successor to Lely: Principal Painter
After the death of Sir Peter Lely, Charles II appoints Kneller Principal Painter in Ordinary to the Crown, jointly with John Riley (other accounts date his tenure as Principal Painter in Ordinary from 1688).
