Anverso: Playa de San Sebastián A la derecha, una figura infantil en primer plano, con sombrero, pero muy abocetada. Tras ella, una estructura rectangular, parece que sobre patas de madera o pequeñas ruedas, dentro de la cual hay una figura abocetada. Puede tratarse de una pequeña caseta de playa o cambiador. Al fondo, el horizonte, y a la izquierda rasguños indicando la playa. Reverso (hoja 44): Playa Por consonancia con el resto de los dibujos, éste debe de representar una playa, aunque resulta confuso. A la derecha, vemos una estructura estrecha, cuadrangular, con techumbre a cuatro aguas, y a su alrededor rasguños que pueden indicar figuras. En la zona izquierda, dos apuntes brevísimos de figuras.

Moves to Madrid: large canvases for the salons
The family moved to Madrid. For the next decade Sorolla concentrated on large canvases of orientalist, mythological, historical and social subjects for salons and international exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, Venice, Munich, Berlin and Chicago.

“A Research”: the Prize of Honour in Madrid
Two paintings linking art and science, “Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope” and “A Research”, won Sorolla the Prize of Honour at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed his friend Simarro in the laboratory, catching the contrast between the reddish-yellow light of a gas burner and the weak mauvish light from the window.
