Becomes an active printmaker
While living in France she works in the ateliers of Georges Visat and Pierre Chave and makes work for limited-edition artists’ books by such poets as Alain Bosquet, René Crevel, Lena Leclerq and André Pieyre de Mandiargues.
1976
Death of Max Ernst
Max Ernst dies, having suffered a stroke a year earlier; the marriage had lasted 30 years. Tanning stays in France for some time, concentrating anew on her painting.
1978
Returns to New York
After her husband’s death she moves to New York (other accounts say she had settled her home and studio there by 1980) and enters an energetic creative period, producing paintings, drawings, collages and prints.
