This is a sketch model for a tomb slab which was never executed. The young poet is shown with his legs and loins enveloped in a shroud.
Gilbert, poet and satirist, suffered an injury to the skull, which caused him to undergo operation of trepanning. He became insane and died at the age of 29 after swallowing the key to his money-box.
The objects at his side were intended to represent surgical instruments.
