Joining the Socialist Party of America
He joined the Socialist Party of America and cast his first presidential vote for Eugene Debs; his radical political views had formed at an early age.
1904
Debut with the Society of American Artists
His early paintings of New Hampshire landscapes and Mount Monadnock were first shown at an exhibition of the Society of American Artists in New York; the canvas Dublin Pond was acquired by Smith College.
1905
Move to Monhegan Island
He undertook his first serious journey and settled for five years on Monhegan Island in Maine, whose stark, primeval beauty became a source of inspiration.
1907
Success of the Maine Landscapes in New York
The first series of Monhegan paintings, exhibited at the Clausen Galleries in New York, won wide critical acclaim; these works laid the foundation of Kent's reputation as an early American modernist.
