Sul dipinto
Il dipinto, uno degli ultimi eseguiti da van Dyck, rappresenta Guglielmo, giovane principe di Orange figlio dello Statolder d'Olanda Federico Enrico d'Orange con Maria Enrichetta Stuart, figlia del re d'Inghilterra Carlo I. Commissionato dai genitori del principe, il dipinto immortala i giovani sposi, convolati a nozze il 12 maggio 1641 a Londra. Guglielmo, quindicenne, veste un abito arancione e tiene la mano della principessa, di nove anni, che veste un abito bianco ricamato. Maria era già stata ritratta numerose volte da van Dyck, assieme ai genitori ed ai fratelli.

Mary and William were mere children when they married: she was nine, he fourteen. Quite unusually she stands on the left due to her higher status – Mary was a king’s daughter, William the son of a stadholder and prince. Mary’s wedding ring highlights the bond
between Holland and England, which was cemented with this marriage. She also wears a diamond brooch, another gift from William.

On 27 February 1640 Van Dyck married Mary Ruthven, daughter of Patrick Ruthven and a lady-in-waiting to the queen; the marriage produced a daughter.

Death of Rubens; Offer to Head His Workshop
When Rubens died in May 1640, Van Dyck was invited to go to Antwerp to take charge of their former workshop.

Long Illness and Declining Health
A letter from Lady Roxburghe of 13 August 1641 reported that Van Dyck was recovering from a long illness; in November his condition worsened, and he returned to England from Paris, where he had gone to paint Cardinal Richelieu.
