In 1990 he is elected an Associate Academician of the National Academy of Design, and in 1992 he becomes a full Academician.

Mentors teenagers in the Art Works project
He is one of ten artists who volunteer to mentor economically deprived teens in a summer-long photography program, Art Works: Teenagers and Artists Collaborate on the Polaroid 20 x 24 Camera, produced by Janeil Engelstad, The Education Project and Polaroid.

Meets Grant Romer: the road to the daguerreotype
Curator Colin Westerbeck uses a grant from the Lannan Foundation to bring Close together with Grant Romer, director of conservation at the George Eastman House; from then on Close explores difficult photographic processes such as the daguerreotype, in collaboration with Jerry Spagnoli, and sophisticated modular, cell-based forms such as tapestry.
