Drebbel has already spent some years at the Latin school in Alkmaar. At Haarlem his teachers are Hendrik Goltzius — engraver, painter, alchemist and humanist — Karel van Mander and Cornelis Corneliszoon of Haarlem; he becomes a skilled copperplate engraver and takes an interest in alchemy.
