Meets John Steinbeck in an Algiers hotel
In 1943, before the Allied invasion of Italy, Capa shared a room in an Algiers hotel with other war correspondents and met the writer John Steinbeck there.

The only civilian photographer on Omaha Beach
On D-Day Capa, attached to the 16th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division (“Big Red One”), landed on Omaha Beach as the only civilian photographer. The photographic historian A. D. Coleman suggests that he travelled in the same landing craft as Colonel George A. Taylor and came ashore near Colleville-sur-Mer an hour and a half after the first wave.

Founds the Magnum Photos agency
In 1947 in Paris Capa founded Magnum Photos with Henri Cartier-Bresson, William Vandivert, David Seymour and George Rodger: the first cooperative agency for freelance photographers worldwide.

A trip to the USSR with Steinbeck
Capa suggested to John Steinbeck, whom he had met again in New York, that they go to the post-war Soviet Union together and make a book; he took photographs in Moscow, Kyiv, Tbilisi, Batumi and among the ruins of Stalingrad.

The Medal of Freedom from General Eisenhower
In 1947 General Dwight D. Eisenhower awarded Capa the Medal of Freedom for his work recording the Second World War in pictures.
