Nella vita di Charles François Daubigny
Tutta la vita1860s
His technique influences the future Impressionists
Daubigny's impasto in the lights, translucent glazes in the shadows and small separate strokes, which earned him both praise and harsh criticism, influenced the future Impressionists in the 1860s. Like them, he cared little for crisp contours and favoured a broad manner.
1864–1874
A decade of his finest pictures: forests and lakes
Daubigny's best-known paintings date from 1864 to 1874 and depict mostly forests and lakes. He was disappointed that the works he considered his finest were not understood by his contemporaries, yet by the end of his life he remained a sought-after and esteemed artist.
1866
First seat on the Paris Salon jury
In 1866 Daubigny joined the jury of the Paris Salon for the first time, alongside his friend Camille Corot. Together with Courbet they relished the scandalous success of Courbet's “Woman with a Parrot”.
1866
Visits England
In 1866 Daubigny visited England; four years later he would return there to escape the Franco-Prussian War.
1868
Helps Monet and Renoir into the Salon
It was Daubigny who helped young artists, among them Claude Monet and Auguste Renoir, to show their work at the Salon of 1868: his own art had much in common with the younger generation.
