Графическое наследие Сурикова обширно и насчитывает сотни листов, среди которых не только эскизы и этюды к его большим полотнам, но и работы в разных жанрах, имеющие самостоятельное значение: пейзажи, портреты, бытовые сцены, натюрморты, иллюстрации к литературным произведениям и популярным изданиям, карикатуры, не лишенные остроумия и политической остроты. В отличие от живописи, с которой Суриков выходил к широкой публике, графика, прежде всего акварель, оставалась преимущественно интимной областью творчества художника, заветным уголком в мастерской, куда доступ дозволялся немногим. Здесь, по словам Абрама Эфроса, «его тяжелый гений обертывался блестящим талантом»*, который, как и в живописи, находился в состоянии неустанного развития. Павел Климов.     The birth of his daughter Elena

    In 1880 Surikov and Elizaveta Share have a second daughter, Elena (1880–1963), later a professor of history and a great lover of the theatre.

    He joins the Peredvizhniki

    In 1881, the year “The Morning of the Streltsy Execution” is completed, Surikov becomes a member of the Peredvizhniki, the Society of Travelling Art Exhibitions; he will remain in it until 1907.

    Tretyakov buys “Menshikov in Beryozovo”

    In 1883 Pavel Tretyakov buys Surikov’s painting “Menshikov in Beryozovo”, and the money is enough for the artist to travel abroad.

    A European tour: the Dresden Gallery and the Louvre

    With the money from the sale of “Menshikov in Beryozovo” Surikov travels abroad: he visits Germany, Italy, France and Austria and gets to know the collection of the Dresden Gallery and that of the Louvre.
