Творчество Федора Васильева – особая страница в пейзажной живописи второй половины ХIХ века. "Гениальным юношей" назвал художника, прожившего очень короткую жизнь, его друг и духовный наставник Иван Крамской. Всего за семь лет творческой биографии Васильевым были созданы произведения, поставившие его имя в один ряд с такими мастерами пейзажа, как Алексей Саврасов, Иван Шишкин, Архип Куинджи.

Небольшая по размеру картина «Иллюминация в Петербурге» написана девятнадцатилетним живописцем. Яркое, захватившее молодого человека зрелище воплощено с большим мастерством. Проступающий на фоне вечернего неба купол Исаакиевского собора хорошо виден от одного из перекинутых через реку Мойку мостиков – отсюда открывалась панорама на торжественно украшенную Исаакиевскую площадь. Собравшиеся на набережной горожане любуются сверкающими фонарями и лампами, украсившими здания.

В данной работе Васильев проявил себя как талантливый колорист, сумевший передать малейшие нюансы цвета и света. Темные силуэты людей, изображенных на переднем плане, зажженные огни и свет окон, отражающихся в обледенелых лужах на мостовой, рассеивающийся дым печных труб – таков «портрет» города в особенный праздничный вечер. Точно установить, в честь какого события в Петербурге была устроена очередная иллюминация, не представляется возможным. Известно, что в 1860-х годах в подобных случаях применялся порох. Лишь к концу XIX столетия в городах для уличного освещения стали использовать электрические лампы.

  1. 1865–1868

    Study at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts

    Vasilyev quit his clerical job and enrolled at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts in St. Petersburg, combining evening classes with work for P. K. Sokolov, a restorer at the Academy of Arts.

  2. June – autumn 1867

    Trip to Valaam with Shishkin

    Together with Shishkin, Vasilyev worked on the island of Valaam for more than five months, from June until late autumn 1867. The sketches and studies formed the basis of the paintings After the Rain, Village Yard, and In the Church Enclosure. Valaam.

  3. autumn 1868

    First Prize for "The Return of the Herd"

    Vasilyev spent the summer months of 1868 with Shishkin in the village of Konstantinovka near St. Petersburg; The Return of the Herd, painted there, won first prize for landscape painting at the competitive exhibition of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, and the Academy of Arts awarded him the title of free artist.

    A Cold and Tuberculosis

    While working on The Thaw in the winter of 1870, Vasilyev caught a severe cold; he was found to have tuberculosis, which determined the course of the rest of his life.

  5. summer 1870

    Journey down the Volga with Repin

    Together with I. Repin and E. Makarov, Vasilyev sailed down the Volga from Tver to Saratov, setting up working quarters opposite the Zhiguli Hills. The Volga impressions and drawings served as the basis for a number of paintings.

  6. 1871

    Move to Yalta

    Because of his tuberculosis, Vasilyev left St. Petersburg for good and, with funds from the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, went to Crimea. He spent the last two years of his life in Yalta, working hard and intensely, at times at the expense of his treatment.
