The title 'Hua' translates as flower in Chinese. This porcelain flower bowl is part of a sculpture series designed by Peter Ting in-collaboration with Zha Caiduan, an accomplished flower maker in Dehua, China, in 2017.
The work combines Peter Ting's elegant design with Zha Caiduan's twenty-year experience in traditional craftsmanship of flower making. The flowers are all modelled by hand in naturalistic manner and carefully placed at the bottom of the cylindrical bowl, which is instead made in moulds. Viewed in distance, flowers are indistinctive and almost concealed by the sleek high wall of the bowl; only when moving close to it and looking from above, one is amazed by the full display of the blossoming flowers revealing their breathtaking beauty one by one. The work is an fine example of the art of concealing and revealing.
Born in Hong Kong, now living and working in the UK, Ting is an established tableware designer and his creations are collected in numerous museums globally. His interest in white porcelain led him to visit Dehua in 2004 and created the ‘Buddha Hands’ coffee cups and saucers, which are in the V&A collection.
