The Japanese belief in ghosts suggests they are the spirits of the deceased who are obsessed with strong emotion and are not yet able to find peace of mind.
This smiling ghost is emerging from behind a stupa, flinging loose and unkempt hair with her fingers while sending flirtatious glances to passersby. The pampas grass and pallid flame are bathed in bloody color, creating an eerie atmosphere. However, she looks coquettish rather than ghastly. With her wide-open eyes, exaggerated mouth full of black-dyed faded teeth, haggard face, and skeletal breast, she seems not to realize that her beauty has wilted away.
