‘In my drawings of that time you can see that I was trying to be like Matisse, without imitating him. I took over what I could use.’ While Bruna in no way pretended to measure up to Matisse, there are evident similarities – and differences – between their work.
Matisse’s lines are rounder, more fluid, and display a greater variation in thickness. Bruna included more details

Matisse's wife and daughter were arrested by the Gestapo for their involvement in Resistance activities.

Meeting Pierre Couturier
Matisse met the Dominican priest Pierre Couturier; their conversations gave rise to the idea of a chapel for the convent at Vence. In early December 1947 the artist drew up the plan of work.
