Sulla scultura

During the mid and late nineteenth century, sculptors, such as Carpeaux were inspired by classical subject matter, compositions and styles. Carpeaux borrowed the pose of the figure of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers, from a well-known antique statue, Crouching Venus. The animated face of the young girl was copied from a bust Carpeaux executed of Anna Foucart, the daughter of a childhood friend of the artist's.

Carpeaux later employed the figure of Flora Kneeling in one of his greatest architectural projects, the sculptural decoration of the Pavilion de Flora of the Louvre, which was completed in 1865. Carpeaux experimented with many different figures of Flora, and this version may have been executed after the public success of the Pavilion de Flora.

  2. 27 – 28 August 1869

An inkwell is thrown at “The Dance”

In the night of 27–28 August 1869 an indignant gentleman hurls an inkwell at the sculpture. It is soon cleaned, but satirical magazines are full of spiteful caricatures, and Prosper Mérimée fumes that savages are dancing the cancan before the Opéra, marvelling that the police do not intervene.

  3. 1870

The war saves “The Dance” from replacement

Under public pressure the emperor ordered the sculpture removed and replaced by a more “decent” group commissioned from Charles Gumery; Carpeaux’s work was saved only by the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War.

  4. 1870

Defeat in the war cancels all commissions

France’s defeat in the war with Prussia cancels all of Carpeaux’s commissions; for lack of funds he eventually gives up running his own studio.
