Two pen and ink portrait sketches of the actor manager Sir Henry Irving (1938-1905). A pencil annotation in the lower left hand corner records that the sketch was drawn by the actor, theatre designer and director Edward Gordon Craig (1869-1966) in Florence on 21 January, 1916, 'with his eyes shut'.
Between 1878 and 1905 the Lyceum Theatre was managed by the actor Sir Henry Irving. The first actor to be knighted, Irving established a leading role for both himself and his theatre during the late 19th century. Under his management the Lyceum theatre became famous for the quality and scale of its spectacular productions.
Edward Gordon Craig was the son of Irving's leading lady, Ellen Terry (1847-1928) who performed alongside Irving for over twenty years.
