Illustratie met de dood van Matamore, één van de personages uit het verhaal Capitaine Fracasse van Theophile Gaultier. Onderuitgezakt tegen een boom zit het dode lichaam van Matamore bedolven onder de sneeuw. In het donker nadert een groep van drie mannen, Tyran, Blazius en Sigognac met een lantaarn die het pad voor hen verlicht.
