Kimura Kōnen lived in Kyoto where he studied under Suzuki Shōnen (1848–1918), a major master of the decorative Shijō school of painting. In this scroll, Kōnen depicted not Daruma but a Daruma doll. These are weighted at the bottom so when knocked over, they immediately bounce back. Daruma dolls serve as symbols of resilience, perseverance, and goal setting.
