The Jacobite rising cuts short his studies
In autumn 1743 Adam matriculated at the University of Edinburgh, taking mathematics under Colin Maclaurin and anatomy under Alexander Monro primus besides the compulsory classes. His studies were interrupted by Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Highlanders, who occupied Edinburgh during the Jacobite rising of 1745.

A serious illness ends his university years
At the end of 1745 Robert fell seriously ill for several months and apparently never returned to the university, having completed only two years of study.

Apprenticed to his father
Recovered from his illness, Robert joined his elder brother John as apprentice to their father, assisting on Inveraray Castle and the extensions of Hopetoun House. His early ambition was to be an artist rather than an architect: his first sketches follow the manner of Salvator Rosa, and his earliest architectural drawings show picturesque Gothic follies.
