Sull’opera
Why this boy is holding a stick is unclear. Rembrandt may have portrayed a victim of leprosy, who was required to carry a stick to warn his healthy fellow citizens. Rembrandt deliberately did not draw the stick entirely straight, giving it a more natural appearance. He used iron gall ink, notorious for eating holes through paper, so-called ink corrosion.

Marriage to Saskia van Uylenburgh
Rembrandt married Saskia van Uylenburgh, cousin of the art dealer Hendrick van Uylenburgh; the wedding took place in the church of Sint Annaparochie without the artist's relatives. The marriage opened his access to commissions from prosperous burghers.

Birth of His Son Titus
In 1641 Rembrandt and Saskia's son Titus was born — the only one of their four children to survive infancy.

Death of Saskia
Saskia died in 1642, probably of tuberculosis, a year after Titus's birth. Rembrandt's drawings of her on her sickbed are among his most deeply felt works.
