«Сосна» Поля Сезанна прославила Прованс. Наряду со знаменитой «Горой Святой Виктории» она стал восприниматься как некий символ, гимн силе и красоте природы. На картине изображена сосна в долине реки Арк. Ствол дерева создает вертикаль композиции, а сплетение ветвей усложняет конструкцию. На протяжении всей своей жизни Сезанн вспоминал окрестности городка Экс-ан-Прованс, где он гулял с друзьями – Золя и Байлем и, а под сенью таких сосен они обычно прятались от палящего солнца. Солнечные блики переливаются и мерцают, рыжая кора большого дерева отливает лиловыми оттенками, зелень кажется и прохладной, и горячей одновременно. Аналитическое отношение к выстраиванию пространства, полного ощущений и впечатлений - ветра, лучей света, запахов и даже, кажется, звуков - восхищало современников мастера и составляет основу его творческого наследия.

    Onset of Diabetes

    Cézanne developed diabetes; the illness further complicated his relations with those around him.

  3. 1895

    First Solo Exhibition at Vollard's

    Ambroise Vollard opened Cézanne's first solo exhibition at his Paris gallery, showing 50 of the roughly 150 works submitted. The exhibition brought his art to a wide public; prices for his works rose a hundredfold.

  4. 25 October 1897

    Death of His Mother

    The artist's mother, Anne-Élisabeth-Honorine Aubert, died.

  5. 1899

    Sale of the Jas de Bouffan

    At his sister's insistence he sold the deserted Jas de Bouffan estate and moved to a small town apartment at 23 rue Boulegon in Aix; a planned purchase of the Château Noir fell through. He hired a housekeeper, Madame Brémond, who cared for him until his death.

  6. 1901–1903

    The Studio on the Chemin des Lauves

    In 1901 he bought a plot of land north of Aix, in 1902 built a studio there to his own specifications (now the Atelier de Cézanne), and moved in in 1903; a long narrow slot was cut into the wall to admit natural light for the large "Bathers."
